The Ideal City:

Poster for Architecture ZA Conference

The image was made for a masterclass held at the Architecture ZA Conference in Pretoria in 2018. The masterclass was designed and organised by 26’10 South Architects with special guests Sameep Padora (Mumbai) and Peter Barber (London). The image was also used in the visual branding for the conference.

This image was made to represent an ideal city. The buildings are simple, and the streets are alive. There is a place for the weary mother, the street cook, the carpenter, the hole-in-the-wall shop.

People live above the street and don’t need to travel far to meet their needs. Late-night shops, traders, customers, and pedestrians help keep the street safe. Verandas and balconies form habitable thresholds between the public and private worlds. Like in a theatre without the fourth wall, people can move between the stage and the audience.

The ideal city is not a ‘smart’ city. It’s probably quite dumb, but it does offer what we long for: connection and belonging.
