26’10 south

I was born in Namibia and spent part of my early childhood in the desert, surrounded by people who could build and repair things, produce most of their own food, and live in a close relationship with nature. We then moved to Johannesburg, where I studied architecture at Wits University. In the mid-1990s I spent a year in the Netherlands, working for the Office for Metropolitan Architecture on projects in Europe and Asia. After completing my studies I worked on rural development projects for Peter Rich Architects, before founding 26’10 south. 

Living and working in Johannesburg has forced me to approach complex problems with an open mind, whilst the early experience of living in the desert has shown me the power of nature and resourcefulness. Working and living abroad gave me a global perspective and a distinct appreciation for South Africa, and Johannesburg in particular. I’ve learned to appreciate this complex yet dynamic city, with its hidden beauty, energy, and diversity. 

Becoming more mindful has opened up a whole new set of possibilities for how I can help people as a designer– from understanding their deeper needs to appreciating the particular qualities of a site to recognizing opportunities for creating wealth through design.

I am inspired to create a Mindful Design Movement as a way to help people make better decisions in the way spaces and resources are used and buildings are made.

Part of my own practice in mindfulness is drawing by hand. I use drawings throughout the design process, but also to understand the world around me, how it is dimensioned and made and to discover the beauty in the everyday.
